Tim Van Laere Gallery Rome è lieta di presentare Swift as a Whirlwind, Through the Marble Sky, la terza mostra personale di Bram Demunter da quando si è unito alla Tim Van Laere Gallery nel 2019, nonché la sua prima mostra nel nostro spazio romano. L’artista presenta in questa esposizione una nuova serie di dipinti e disegni.
Il lavoro di Bram Demunter si distingue per la sua capacità di intrecciare miti, storia e narrazione personale. Una delle sue caratteristiche più sorprendenti è l’uso di motivi visivi che collegano mondi apparentemente distanti. Figure del mito classico, come dei, eroi e mostri, emergono da o interagiscono con i simboli della vita contemporanea, creando una tensione dinamica che mette in discussione la linearità della storia, offrendo un dialogo tra epoche diverse che invita a una comprensione più fluida e interconnessa dell’esperienza umana. Le pennellate di Demunter, ricche di texture e colori vivaci, sembrano riflettere questa complessità. Creano un senso di movimento ed energia, che evoca tanto il tumulto delle antiche battaglie quanto i momenti di quiete della riflessione personale. Il risultato è un’opera che si percepisce simultaneamente senza tempo e immediata, intrisa di storia ma anche indiscutibilmente moderna nelle tematiche. Ciò che rende affascinante l’approccio di Demunter alla narrazione è la sua abilità nel bilanciare il monumentale con l’intimo. I suoi dipinti non raccontano solo storie di eroismo o tragedia, ma creano anche spazi in cui le emozioni e le esperienze individuali trovano voce. Attraverso la fusione di temi mitici e simbolismi personali, invita gli spettatori a riflettere sul proprio posto all’interno di queste grandi narrazioni e, forse, li ispira a trovare significato nei miti non raccontati delle loro stesse vite.
In questa nuova serie di dipinti, Bram Demunter esplora numerose tracce di figure mistiche come Mad Meg e storie epiche come Beowulf, Paradise Lost e Don Chisciotte. Come questi racconti, anche le sue opere rivelano il caos e l’assurdità dell’esistenza umana, mettendo in evidenza il nostro impatto sul mondo naturale. L’essenza del lavoro di Bram Demunter risiede nella sua profonda esplorazione della condizione umana, focalizzandosi su temi come la trasformazione, il conflitto interiore e la complessa relazione tra l’umanità e il mondo naturale. I suoi dipinti evocano spesso la tensione tra l’aspirazione umana e le forze travolgenti della natura, rappresentando sia la fragilità che la potenza dello spirito umano in un mondo segnato da lotte ambientali ed esistenziali. L’arte di Demunter esplora la condizione umana attraverso una visione sfumata della psiche, dove gli individui si trovano a navigare nel caos dell’esistenza, affrontando forze interne ed esterne che plasmano le loro identità. In questo contesto, l’uso di figure mitiche e letterarie, come Beowulf, Don Chisciotte e Mad Meg, non le riduce a simboli di eroismo o follia, ma le presenta come riflessi della vulnerabilità umana e della costante ricerca di significato in un mondo che spesso appare incomprensibile. In queste figure, Bram Demunter esplora aspetti universali della condizione umana, come il desiderio di scopo, la lotta contro i propri limiti e le conseguenze dell’ambizione, sia personale che collettiva. Le sue rappresentazioni distorte, spesso surreali, suggeriscono che la ricerca dell’eroismo o dell’identità è intrinsecamente carica di pericoli. Le figure epiche che dipinge non sono semplicemente guerrieri trionfanti o incarnazioni di una volontà inespugnabile, ma individui segnati dal dubbio, dal dolore e dalla frammentazione interiore. Queste figure vengono spesso collocate in paesaggi che sembrano inospitali e opprimenti: cieli turbolenti, terreni frastagliati o corpi colti in un movimento violento. Questi scenari sottolineano la precarietà del loro posto in un mondo imprevedibile, riflettendo la nostra vulnerabilità di fronte a forze che vanno oltre il nostro controllo. Che si tratti di forze naturali, sociali o esistenziali, il dialogo tra l’umanità e un ambiente ostile diventa una riflessione sulla condizione umana, intrisa di incertezze e sfide costanti.

| Tim Van Laere Gallery Rome is pleased to present Swift as a Whirlwind, Through the Marble Sky. This is Bram Demunter’s third solo show since joining Tim Van Laere Gallery in 2019 and his first show in our Roman space. In this exhibition, Demunter will present a new series of paintings and drawings.
Bram Demunter is an artist whose work thrives on the rich interplay between myth, history, and personal narrative. One of the striking features of Demunter’s paintings is his ability to use visual motifs to bridge disparate worlds. Figures from classical myth, like gods, heroes, and monsters, may emerge from or interact with the symbols of contemporary life. This dynamic tension creates a sense of dialogue between different epochs and experiences, questioning the linearity of history and offering instead a more fluid, interconnected understanding of human experience. The brushstrokes themselves seem to mirror this complexity. Rich textures and vibrant colors swirl together, creating a sense of movement and energy that suggests both the tumult of ancient battles and the quiet moments of personal introspection. The result is a body of work that feels simultaneously timeless and immediate, steeped in history yet undeniably modern in its concerns. Ultimately, what makes Demunter’s approach to storytelling so compelling is his ability to balance the monumental with the intimate. His paintings are not just grand narratives of heroism or tragedy but also spaces where individual emotions and experiences resonate. By blending mythic themes with personal symbolism, he creates works that invite viewers to reflect on their own place within these larger stories, and perhaps even inspire them to find meaning in the untold myths of their own lives

In these figures, Demunter explores universal aspects of the human condition: the desire for purpose, the struggle against one’s own limitations, and the consequences of personal and collective ambition. Through his distorted, often surreal depictions of these figures, Demunter suggests that the quest for heroism or identity is fraught with peril. These epic figures are not simply triumphant warriors or unassailable forces of will, but individuals wrestling with doubt, pain, and internal fragmentation. They are often placed in landscapes that seem inhospitable or overwhelming—swirling skies, jagged terrains, or figures caught in violent motion—mirroring the precariousness of their place in an unpredictable world. This dialogue between humanity and an often hostile environment reflects our vulnerability in the face of forces beyond our control, whether they be natural, societal, or existential.
